Strategic Planning

For a small business, strategic planning is essential.  Unfortunately, many small business owners are busy “fighting fires” daily and find themselves with little time for planning.  Traditional strategic planning, as practiced by many of the large consulting firms, has been sarcastically been referred to as the “seagull model”, where a large firm charges large dollars, flies in from a distant city, drops a plan on their heads, and flies away.  For years, I have been helping smaller organizations using a more efficient, less costly approach called strategic planning conferences (SPCs). Using a combination of limited upfront one-on-one meetings followed by several 2-day intensive facilitated working sessions, a small business can develop its mission/vision statement, perform a SWOT analysis, develop a hierarchy of strategic goals and objectives, perform a gap analysis, and develop an action plan. The SPC process is described in the attached article that I wrote many years ago. While the article was written a number of years ago, the SPC process remain relevant today and has been has applied successfully throughout the years.
